AI Robotics Supply Chain Innovation Automation
The traditional supply chain model is being upended, shifting from one designed for relatively standardized products to one that's highly complex and data driven. These shifts demand mass product customization, more accurate supply chain planning, and faster multichannel retail responsiveness that go far beyond the abilities of the typical workforce and infrastructure.
Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics automation provide companies with the ability to proactively respond to these challenges. Retailers including Target, Walmart and Lowe's have already begun to integrate these technologies into their supply chain strategies.
Key applications include:
- AI as the autopilot — optimizing planning, fulfillment and inventory management.
- In-store automation — Morrisons (UK) predicts stock availability; Walmart's robots scan shelves for out-of-stock items, incorrect prices, and missing labels.
- Self-driving trucks, delivery carts, automated fulfillment — and real-time shipment tracking.
While automation will impact the workforce, AI and robotics ultimately require a highly skilled team — creating new job opportunities and unlocking time for more creative work. Retailers should develop an enterprise-wide AI strategy aligned with business aspirations and implemented in an agile way.
